چکیده

Holthuisana transversa (von Martens), a freshwater/land crab from arid areas of Australia, is an efficient bimodal breather. In water, resting MO2 (1-65^molg"^") and Vw ( lS^mlg" 1 h") at 25°C were lower than in other aquatic crabs whilst percentage extraction of oxygen was quite high (47 %). MO2 was not regulated at low ambient PQ2 but could be increased at least three times during exercise. Normoxic P1O2 was low (18Torr) compared with other water-breathing crabs. The haemolymph contained haemocyanin which had a moderate affinity for oxygen (P50 = 80 Torr) and carried over 90% of the oxygen transported. Oxygen content of postbranchial haemolymph was low (346^moll"). There was a small positive Bohr shift (log Pso/pH-0-33). The strategy of gas exchange in water is discussed and compared with that of aquatic crabs.

Aerial Gas Exchange in Australian Freshwater/land Crabs of the Genus Holthuisana

Holthuisana valentula Riek and H. agassizi (Rathbun) both ventilate their lungs by lateral oscillations of the thoracic walls within the branchial chambers. Air enters and leaves the lungs via the prebranchial apertures and the Milne-Edwards apertures. At rest, active ventilation in H. transversa was low (0-95 mlg~^ h") and a high diffusional component was evident. After disturbance, VA rose to...

The Role of the Gills and Branchiostegites in Gas Exchange in a Bimodally Breathing Crab, Holthuisana Transversa: Evidence for a Facultative Change in the Distribution of the Respiratory Circulation

The respiratory circulation was investigated in air-breathing and waterbreathing Holthuisana transversa von Martens by analysis of the distribution of radioactive microspheres injected into the haemocoel at seven locations. The gills and putative lungs (branchiostegites and membraneous thoracic walls) both trap approximately 90 % of the microspheres entrained in their afferent circulations. The...

Water Balance and Urine Production in the Australian Arid-zone Crab Holthuisana

The permeability to tritiated water (hourly exchange fraction = 0-164) and the rate of urine flow (0-47% body weight/day) are lower than recorded in other freshwater decapods. The calculated net osmotic water flux (2-71 % body weight/day) is 5 times the water output in the urine, indicating that there is extrarenal excretion of water. Water balance is maintained in the absence of urine producti...

Survey of bacteria associated with abdominal flap of freshwater crab (Potamon ebonyicum) at Ebonyi River basin Nigeria

Ebonyi River basin of south east Nigeria is home to the freshwater crab Potamon ebonyicum, which are consumed indiscriminately by inhabitants and tourists. Bulk of the crab meat is obtained by crabbing. A preliminary survey of pathogenic bacteria associated with vulnerable morphological part of the crab species was carried out in the basin. Bacteria were isolated from abdominal flaps of the mal...
